The famous Ajanta caves are situated about 99-kms away from Aurangabad district in the state of Maharashtra. These caves are
regarded as a world heritage site and were carved out from the 2nd century BC to 6th century AD. They are placed in a
horseshoe shape about 3.5 m away from the village. The river Wagura, a mountain stream flows along the bottom of the ravine.

This river falls from a height of 200 ft, thus making a series of waterfalls. The sound of the waterfalls can be heard in the caves also.Ajanta CavesThe intriguing Ajanta Caves are carved out of large rocks and are 30 in number. These caves are dedicated to Lord
Buddha. The followers and students of Buddhism resided here to study this religion. They have decorated these caves with the help of their excellent architectural skills and artistic paintings.The carvings and the paintings in the caves depict the life stories of Lord Buddha. Along with this, several types of human
and animal figures are also carved out of the rocks.
At Ajanta, the paintings on the walls, illustrate the events in the life of prince Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism
and in the more popular Jatakas stories pertaining to Buddha's previous incarnation. According to the older conceptions, the
Buddha wrought many deeds of kindness and mercy in a long series of transmigration as a Bodhisattva, before achieving his final birth as the sage of sakyas.

he Elephanta Caves are located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour that is 10 kilometres to the east of the city of
Mumbai,The island located on an arm of the Arabian Sea, has two groups of caves, a large group of five Hindu caves and a smaller group of two Buddhist caves.
The former caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, representing the Shaiva Hindu sect,
dedicated to the god Shiva. |

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 to preserve the artwork. It is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Chalukyas who defeated the Kalacuris as well as the Konkan Mauryas are also believed by some to be creators of the main
cave, in the mid 7th century. The Rashtrakutas are the last claimants of the creation of the main cave, approximated to early
7th to late 8th century. The Elephanta Shiva cave resembles the 8th century Rashtrakuta rock-temple Kailash Temple at Ellora,
in some aspects. The Portuguese named the island as "Elephanta Island" in honour of a huge rock-cut black stone statue of an
elephant that was then installed on a mound, a short distance to the east of Gharapuri village. The Elephenta name has given by the Portuguese in 17th century, the ancient neame of this island was Gharapuri |

Mumbai's principal landmark, the Gateway of India is a huge archway on the ocean’s edge at Apollo Bunder. It is the starting point for most tourists who want to explore the city. This famous monument was built to commemorate the visit of the first ever British Monarch, King George V and Queen Mary in 1911.The foundation stone was laid down by the then Governor of Bombay (Mumbai) on March 31st 1913. |

The archway is 26 meters high and joined with four turrets and intricate lattice work carved on stones. The arch alone was built at the cost of Rs 21 lakhs. It was built in Indo-Sarcenic style, though some influence of Gujarati style is also evident in its architecture. This majestic structure was designed by the Scottish architect George Wittet and is a hybrid of the Arc de Triomphe of Paris. |
